3. MECHANISM OF ACTION
Lactulose (Osmotic Laxative + Prebiotic)
Lactulose is a non-absorbable synthetic disaccharide (galactose + fructose) that resists hydrolysis by intestinal disaccharidases. On reaching the colon, it is fermented by saccharolytic bacteria (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium) into short-chain organic acids (lactic acid, acetic acid, formic acid), which:
